'Not only is punishment risky, but it also fails to teach the dog an acceptable alternate behaviour. The dog does not learn what to do the next time he is in the same situation. He only learns to fear the situation.' Emma Parsons, Click to Calm p73

Oh hey, a blog post!

Gotta stop forgetting about this! My life's been pretty busy/stressful lately: I'm working on my dissertation research, as well as working on the two other modules for this semester; I have my voluntary job Monday and Tuesday; and then I've got all the animals to look after. I've barely had time to play any games whatsoever, which is very unlike me!

I don't think I mentioned it, but maybe a week or two after I got the rats, I found my remaining two girl mice dead in their cage together. I have no idea what either died of, but it can't have been anything contagious or Wheatley (living in the cage next to them) would have gotten it too.

Wheatley now lives in the living room, next to the mice. Despite the fact that mice are supposed to be naturally afraid of the smell of rats, he spent all his time when in the barred cage trying to get into the rats' cage. He's since been moved into a Mini Duna cage, which is SO much better for a smelly male mouse--he can't soak the bars in pee anymore, and the fact that there's only bars at the top means I can pile a lot of substrate in for him. The wheel is much nicer and quieter too. :)

Lola is slowly getting more accustomed to the rats, though Jess hasn't been introduced to them yet--and I very doubt she will. She's way too full of prey drive and ignorant of what I want for a meeting to ever be totally safe.

Speaking of which, all of the rats (including scaredy Valentine) are getting way more confident. They all come out at least once a day, and Chell especially is a cuddler--she'll actually ask to come out of the cage, and will nestle down and sleep on me. A couple of nights ago, all of the rats were out at once and they were all sleeping under a blanket on the couch. And I thought girl rats were supposed to be crazy!

I know I say this a lot, but I'm going to try and get back into the blog. I miss it. I'll probably try to update at least once a week...
